St Bernard Heartworm Medium 6pk
Saint Bernard Pet Care Monthly Soluble Heartworm Tablets are an efficient and cost-effective method of controlling heartworms in dogs.
It works to prevent heartworm infection by killing the larval stages of Heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitus) should your pet be infected by a carrier mosquito. The drug effectively causes the Larval stages to be paralysed and therefore unable to develop into adults, thus protecting your beloved pet from this nasty killer. This treatment is safe to use and has no side effects when administered at normal dosages in dogs that aren’t allergic to them, although caution should be used when administering them to Collie breeds of dog.

►Easy to administer.
►When administered at normal dosages in dogs, side effects are rare (unless allergic – which is also rare).
Why should I treat my pet for Heartworm?
Heartworm is generally spread by biting insects, especially mosquitos. Don’t think that just because your pet is an indoor animal, they are safe, we have all been bitten by a mosquito in the house or the car at some point in our lives…so can your dog.
Obviously tropical areas have a higher incidence of mosquitos and Heartworm, however, studies in foxes have shown that even in Melbourne suburbs, Heartworm prevalence can be as high as 7%, and in Sydney suburbs as high as 9%. While there have been no studies in companion animals to compare this to, it is reasonable to assume that almost 1 in 10 untreated pets may be affected by Heartworm.
Heartworm can be bad news for dogs. The adult worms set up shop in the heart, surrounding blood vessels, and lungs, causing damage to these major organs as they do so. Symptoms are as a result of heart failure, and in dogs can include:
- Lethargy and loss of energy when exercising
- Coughing or difficulty breathing
- Weight loss
- Swollen belly
- Sudden collapse
- Sudden death
These parasites are discreet, that is, they can hide in your pet for a long time before they begin to show signs of an infestation because they are slow to mature. Once mature, the adults start shedding microfilaria into the blood, ready for a mosquito to transfer to another dog.
Treating a heartworm infection is costly, risky, painful, and prolonged. As with most things in life, prevention is much better than cure.

It is a wise idea to do a second test, 6 months after starting treatment as the test will only detect adult worms and the larval stages can take up to 6 months to develop into adults.
2) If you are more than a month overdue for your treatment, it is advisable to consult with a veterinarian, who will likely advise you to restart the medication and test 6 months after restarting medications.
